Independent Advocacy

Have you heard of Independent Advocacy? 

They can support:

  • Adults, young people, and children with mental health issues
  • Adults, young people, and children with a learning disability
  • Adults with a physical disability
  • Elderly people, including those diagnosed with Dementia
  • Children and young people

An independent advocate can

  • help a person to consider their options
  • support them to get their views heard and valued
  • get the information they need
  • be non-judgemental 
  • promote their right to be involved in decisions about their life

An independent advocate cannot

  • offer advice
  • befriend
  • find solutions to the problem
  • influence decisions
  • transport to appointments 

And did you know?

  • They have paid advocacy staff and full trained volunteer, advocates
  • They work independently of all other services 
  • They offer support to a range of people across Perth & Kinross
  • They seek feedback from their service users to help improve
  • They follow Codes of Practice set out by the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance
  • They can support with "Non-Instructed" Advocacy when a person does not have the capacity to make informed decisions.
