Caring means something different for everyone – but one thing that's true for every carer is that you cannot keep going without a break.
The regular demands of caring can soon lead to feelings of exhaustion, so it's important to recognise when you need a break. There are lots of different options that can be explored. You may need an hour each week, a day here and there, a week or two for a holiday, or a combination of all of these.
When was the last time you gave yourself a break? When did you last have an evening out, go for a swim, try something new, take a holiday? When did you last have a chance to do all the things you would like to do, but can’t do while you are caring – everyday things such as meeting up with friends, visiting family or simply catching up with some sleep?
Leisure time is often the first thing that disappears for carers and the last thing they have time for, and yet it is one of the best stress relievers.
