Barnardo's Space4U Service Perth & Kinross

A partnership between Barnardo's and Perth and Kinross Council working together with TCA

The new Space4U Service in Perth & Kinross is a partnership between Barnardo’s and PKC working together with Tayside Council on Alcohol (TCA)

Within our Space4U Service, Barnardo’s and TCA will work together using a flexible service design to support children and families impacted by parental substance use, parental mental health issues, and who may be living in households where there is domestic abuse, across Perth & Kinross.  We will deliver work with young people aged up to 16 years and their families to address their needs and wellbeing, and help agencies work together to divert the families from crisis. Our service will augment existing support plans. Services will be provided by Barnardo’s and our partner providers Tayside Council on Alcohol.

The Service Aims

  • To engage with and support families affected by parental substance misuse, poor parental mental health and who may be living in households where there is domestic abuse
  • To support children and young people aged up to 16 years to have a safe space, to be listened to, have their views heard, gain a greater understanding of their family situation, reduce isolation and increase self-esteem.
  • To provide a whole family approach offering support to parents and carers, building on strengths, helping to reduce risks and promote positive change.

Support is available from 8am until 9pm including weekends, as required.

To access this service referrals must be made through Perth & Kinross Social Work Services for Children, Young People and Families.

What we Offer

  • Individual one to one emotional support - child-led individual sessions using therapeutic play and talking approaches to promote emotional wellbeing
  • One to one activity based sessions to promote self-esteem building and social opportunities by linking children to activities in their community
  • Family work to strengthen family relationships and communication
  • Individual support to parents and carers offering emotional support and strengthening their parenting capacity on issues linked to addiction, mental health and effects of domestic abuse.
  • Parent/carer buddy support to help parents/carers feel less isolated and more confident in their roles.
  • Practical support to help families with routines in the home and access to other supports and services

We can offer intensive packages of support as needs arise.  There is no time limit to our intervention but we will review on a 12 weekly basis to ensure our service remains required.
